Making of a terrorist: from Gopalganj to NYC

Bangladeshi youth Bangladeshi youth Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, who was arrested in United States for his attempt of bombing the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City hails from Gopalganj district in Bangladesh and was born and raised in the old part of Dhaka city. His father, Quazi Mohammad Ahsanullah works with a private owned bank in Bangladesh, while most of the relatives of Nafis are well placed in the Bangladeshi society. According to an attorney handling the case, the Bangladesh student responsible for plotting to detonate a truck bomb outside the New York Federal Reserve is one of the most dangerous terrorists in the U.S. since 9/11.

Attorney Loretta Lynch compared the 21-year-old to previous terrorists who made their way into the U.S. like the Zazi members who plotted to bomb New York City's subway system in 2009.

"I would say he was as dangerous if not more so than the Zazi members because nothing was going to stop him. He was thinking if I do survive this, this will set me up to carry out bigger and better plots in the future" Lynch said.

Commenting on Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, attorney Loretta Lynch said, "He came here with the specific purpose of carrying out a terrorist attack and he came here already radicalized."

Parents and family members of Quazi Nafis termed his arrest as "conspiracy", while attorney Lynch said, "It's not the government targeting these young people it's al Qaeda targeting these young people and we've got to figure out a way to break that hold."

She said, "He was not someone, again, who sat at the feet of Osama bin laden and learned but someone who was inspired by him."

According to the FBI complaint, Nafis arrived in the U.S. on a student visa in January but was in fact acting on behalf of al-Qaeda, and had come to the country with jihadist intentions. He was reportedly influenced by al-Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki and the radical publication Inspire. In the criminal complaint of FBI, Nafis was quoting saying: "All I had in my mind are how to destroy America... I came up to this conclusion that targeting America's economy is most efficient way to draw the path of obliteration of America as well as the path of establishment of Khilapha."

It may be mentioned here that, outlawed Jihadist group Hizbut Tahrir and Hizb Ut Towhid, in their agenda, are denouncing democracy and democratic institutions, thus terming United States and the West as "evils". These groups advocate transforming Bangladesh and other nations into Caliphate states with strict observance of Sharia law. Both the groups consider support elimination of the State of Israel from the global map and advocate extending "all out support" to the jihadists of Hamas, Hezbollah and those within Jammu-Kashmir regions in India. Hizbut Tahrir and Hizb Ut Towhid consider jihad and suicide bombing as "sacred task", while they also encourage killing Jews and Christians as well as non-Muslims as part of their so-called Holy War or Jihad.

Bangladeshi intelligence agencies are already continuing extensive investigation into the case of Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis and have already took his parents into custody for interrogation. Some of the front-ranking leaders of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League already blamed Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for harbouring Jihad and exporting jihadist-mindset youths to Western nations. On the other hand, members of the civil society in Bangladesh are seeing Hizbut Tahrir and Hizb Ut Towhid as main culprit behind giving jihadist indoctrination amongst the youths in the country. Bangladesh chapter of Hizbut Tahrir was initiated by Mohiuddin Ahmed, a professor of Dhaka University. Later activities of Hizbut Tahrir spread in most of the secularist educational institutions in the country along with some of the prestigious private-run colleges and universities. Most importantly, major segment of the members and activists of Hizbut Tahrir belong to the affluent class in the society. Similarly, jihadist group Hizb Ut Towhid started operations in Bangladesh under the leadership of Bayeezid Khan Panni aka Selim Panni, who hails from an affluent family in Tangail district in Bangladesh. Most of the activists of Panni's jihadist group are from the affluent class, while the organization has already spread its branch in a number of nations including Malaysia. Hizb Ut Towhid also runs several business enterprises in Bangladesh and abroad while its donors put their fund of Islamic Charity named Zakaat into the activities of this notorious Jihadist outfit.
